1. Navigating the Flin Flon Heritage Project website

  • The easiest way to navigate our website is to use the menu system. Pictures are categorized under 5 main headings: City of Flin Flon, People, Activities, Business, Media
  • There are multiple categories under each menu item. Clicking on these categories will take you directly to a page of thumbnails or, to a list of albums associated with that category.
  • The web-site is fully searchable by typing one or more words into the search box. (Place a comma ( , ) between each word when looking for multiple topics.  Other common search techniques work well for example when you want occurrences of specific items like the Mayor of Flin Flon you would type “Flin Flon & Mayor”

2. Viewing the photos

  • Thumbnails: when using the menu system or the search function to find and view photos, you will get a page (or more)  of small images called thumbnails. These thumbnails give you an overview of the images available on a particular topic. When moving your cursor over the thumbnails, your cursor changes to a magnifying glass. By clicking with the magnifying glass, you enlarge the image in a separate window. You can close this window by clicking the X at the top right of the screen or just clicking on the background. You can also go forward or backward using the arrows on the left and right side of the screen.
  • Slideshows: slideshows give you the most information a group of images, including their titles, full descriptors, camera data if available, as well as additional files (like PDF’s – see #3) or stories which may be related to the images. Slideshows also give you an opportunity to comment on an image (perhaps you have something to add to the description) You can access slideshows by selecting ‘slideshows & album list’ from the Home Menu or selecting other menu items linked to album lists. When the alphabetical album list appears, select the album in which you are interested and then click the blue ‘Slideshow’ link.
  • Enlarged images: Many images are larger than the normal setting. To view the full-sized image:
    Microsoft Explorer: not normally available
Mozilla Firefox: right mouse click “View Image” (return by back arrow)
Google Chrome: right mouse click “Open image in new tab” (return by X in new tab)
Some images will feature (+ IMAGE) which means this image can be enlarged (Firefox and Chrome).

3. Viewing PDF files

  • Some of our photos are linked to a type of file called a PDF file (for example, old newspapers, old yearbooks, etc.). If you find that your computer does not open this file automatically, download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader, (It is free) which allows you to open, view and print PDF files by clicking on the highlighted link above, or on the small icon at the right..
